14 - 24 June, 2005 - The AIMS Head and Neck Institute is offering a Comprehensive Head and Neck Reconstruction Course - a practical laboratory course in microvascular surgery and flap harvesting, in two batches.

The course is designed for higher surgical trainees in head and neck surgery to attain practical skills in microvascular surgery as well as to learn the technique of harvesting commonly used flaps for head and neck reconstruction. The course has been structured to gain maximum hands-on experience in the microvascular laboratory and to learn step-by-step technique of harvesting flaps in cadavers under the supervision of experienced faculty. Delegates will also have opportunity to participate in live operating procedures.

At the completion of course the trainees are expected to:

  • Acquire skills for microvascular surgery
  • Learn steps of harvesting common flaps used for head and neck reconstruction

Course Details

Batch I: Tuesday June 14 to Monday June 20

Days 1 - 4 Laboratory Training in Microvascular Procedures
This part of the course will be conducted in the surgical skills laboratory. Each of the participant will have separate table equipped with operating microscope, micro instruments and sutures. During these four days the participants will be able to do hands on anastamosis of different kinds in animal vessels and nerves under guidance of experienced microvascular surgeons. Various anastamosis techniques like artery and vein end to end and end to side anastamosis, use of vein grafts and nerve repair will be demonstrated initially and the participant will be able to practice it themselves during the course.

Days 5 - 6 Cadaver Dissection of Flaps
This part of the programme will be conducted in the anatomy demonstration hall. Various free and pedicled flap harvest techniques will be demonstrated in the cadavers. Following each demonstration the delegates will have adequate time to do these dissections under supervision. The flaps which will be demonstrated include, radial forearm, lateral arm, rectus abdominis, fibula, DCIA, lattismus dorsi, scapula, pectoralis major, trapezius and other commonly used flaps in head and neck reconstruction.

Day 7 Participation in Operative Procedures (two cases of micro vascular flap reconstructions)
The delegates will have chance to attend operation theatre suite. Two major free flap reconstructions like reconstruction of mandible and tongue will be demonstrated.
